چکیده

[1] The large martian outflow channels terminating in Chryse Planitia are remnants of flooding events involving the localized discharge of millions of cubic kilometers of subsurface water, more than can be regionally stored in the crust. We use a dynamic groundwater model to demonstrate that snowpack or glaciers on the Tharsis rise, formed during periods of high obliquity when ice was stable at low latitudes, may have provided an efficient source of recharge and hydraulic head for the circum-Chryse outflowchannels.Water isdischarged through theoutflowchannels several times faster in Tharsis recharge models than in comparable South Pole recharge models.

The Martian hydrologic system: Multiple recharge centers at large volcanic provinces and the contribution of snowmelt to outflow channel activity

Global recharge of the martian hydrologic system has traditionally been viewed as occurring through basal melting of the south polar cap. We conclude that regional recharge of a groundwater system at the large volcanic provinces, Elysium and Tharsis, is also very plausible and has several advantages over a south polar recharge source in providing a more direct, efficient supply of water to the ...

Sources of water for the outflow channels on Mars: Implications of the Late Noachian “icy highlands” model for melting and groundwater recharge on the Tharsis rise

From the Late Noachian period, through the Hesperian, and into the Amazonian periods on Mars, large outflow channels were formed. Many are interpreted to have originated through the catastrophic discharge of groundwater from martian aquifers, involving the release of up to millions of cubickilometers of water. Such a mechanism for outflow channel formation requires that martian aquifers were su...

Regionally compartmented groundwater flow on Mars

[1] Groundwater flow on Mars likely contributed to the formation of several types of morphologic and mineralogic features, including chaotic terrains, valley networks, Meridiani Planum geologic units and, potentially, sulfate and phyllosilicate deposits. A central issue for these features is the spatial scale of groundwater flow required for their formation. For groundwater simulation purposes,...

Tharsis-driven Hydrology and the Martian Outflow Channels

Introduction: The outflow channels of Mars provide evidence for a dramatic subsurface hydrology during the Hesperian epoch (~3.7 to 3.0 Ga). These channels appear to have been carved by the eruption of catastrophic floods from groundwater aquifers. The large total flood volumes inferred to have been necessary to carve the outflow channels [1] suggest that a global scale hydrologic system is req...
